Walmart Recalls 850K Water Bottles

Walmart has recently issued a major recall involving approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail 64-ounce stainless steel insulated water bottles. Several serious injuries led to the recall after the lid began ejecting with great force when opened. It struck some users in the eye, causing permanent vision loss.
The recall has made consumers more cautious about certain products. This article covers the recall details, what to do if you own one of these bottles, the legal issues involved, and how KAASS LAW can help those affected.

Product Recall Details

The recall was announced after multiple incidents where users of the Ozark Trail insulated water bottles experienced sudden and unexpected ejection of the bottle lids. The bottles involved are 64-ounce stainless steel insulated models sold at Walmart stores and online between 2017 and 2025. The defect occurs when pressure is built up inside the bottle, mainly because of carbonated drinks or other beverages such as milk or juice being stored in the bottles for an extended period of time.

Opening the lid releases built-up pressure, causing it to burst off with excessive force. The lid ejecting unexpectedly has caused multiple injuries to consumers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued warnings highlighting the risk of impact and laceration injuries. The recall affects about 850,000 bottles sold throughout the years, which is a significant number considering the widespread use of such insulated bottles for hydration at work, school, or during activities.

What Contributes to The Recall?

The problem stems from the bottle’s design, which allows pressure to build up and forces the lid to burst open. Insulated bottles typically seal tightly to keep drinks hot or cold. However, storing carbonated beverages like soda or sparkling water causes gas to build inside, increasing internal pressure.
. Additionally, beverages such as milk or juice can ferment slightly over time, producing gas and increasing internal pressure. This effect, in turn, leads to the lids of the bottles popping open with extreme force.

If the bottle doesn’t release pressure slowly, the lid can eject with force when opened. It may strike the face or eyes, causing injuries from cuts to permanent vision loss.
The design of the lid does not adequately prevent such dangerous ejection under these conditions.

Reported Injuries and Risks

As of now, Walmart has received reports from consumers who experienced injuries related to the lids ejecting. Among the reports they have received, three of them reported to be very serious injuries. Two of those involved permanent loss of vision in one eye, which is a tragic and life-altering consequence. Other reported injuries included facial bruising and cuts.

Because these bottles are popular among families, outdoor enthusiasts, and workers, the risk of injury affects a broad demographic. It is especially concerning because many consumers would not expect a water bottle to cause so much hazard or harm. As a result, it is critical for consumers to understand the recall and take immediate action if they own one of the affected bottles.

What Should Consumers Do?

Stop using the 64-ounce stainless steel insulated water bottle, especially if bought from Walmart between 2017 and 2025. Check the bottle for model numbers or markings to see if it’s part of the recall. Customers can enter information on Walmart’s recall website to see if their bottle is covered. Consumers may also return the recalled bottles to Walmart stores for a full refund. For those who have suffered injuries, especially serious injuries such as vision loss, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Documentation of injuries and medical reports will also be important if pursuing legal action.

Legal Implications of Product Recalls

Customers may qualify for compensation if a product, like a water bottle, has a design flaw that causes serious harm.
Manufacturers and retailers are held accountable by product liability legislation for making sure their goods are safe for the purposes for which they are designed. Affected parties may make claims for damages, such as medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and more, if a flaw results in harm.

In this case, the design of the lid and the failure to warn consumers of the risks could be the basis for product responsibility claims. Walmart, as both the retailer and manufacturer, could be held responsible.
However, navigating the legal system can be difficult, especially when dealing with product recalls and injuries.
